Cartographic Principles!

 5 of the main cartographic design principles are :

Legibility  Is the map readable? 

Visual contrast  Does the map subject stand out? 

Figure-ground  Is there dimension to the map? 

Hierarchical Layers Are the data, information, and imagery ordered correctly?

Balance Are the map elements positioned well?


With all these correctly done, a map is an easy fun read, and a super way to explore the world!

So follow the principles above and have all the Map Elements in place and you will be on your way to becoming a Map-Maker!

Get to know the 5 Map Elements

Maps are made up of 5 main elements on the page (like ingredients in a cake)

GIMME 5

  1. Frame 
  2. Legend or Key
  3. Title
  4. North Arrow or Grid
  5. Scale bar or text

Every map should have a reference to where the information came from (even if it is your own data), this is known as Copyright Statement or Citation.
